hi,

i hav just installed the new 'Vail' version of Home Server on a VMware virtual PC. no everything was going fine until, i tried remote access from the host of the virtual PC. I can get onto the servers page (where you type in the IP address into internet explorer and it comes up with the shared folders and PC's etc) but when i try and remote desktop into the server a i get an error saying 'your computer cannot connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server address requested and the certificate subject name do not match. Contact you network administrator for assistance'

i hav googled this error but it didnt bring up much and the stuff it did bring up was all way too advanced words for me.

so please could someone help me and explain what i need to do to resolve this problem and please could i hav the solution in nice easy to understand terms :)

thanks

ali

Not knowing WHS but that makes complete sense in RDP terms.

It's trying to use SSL to connect to the RD Gateway, but for SSL to function to certificate needs to match the name you're using to access it. I presume it has self issued a cert to the devices name, but you are accessing it by IP. You either need to re-issue the cert to the devices IP address or add the name to the hosts file on the PC you're trying to access it from

hi iaind thanks for that although i didnt understand any of it please could i hav that in 'noob' language :P lol thanks

Open the RDP client and click the advanced tab and then the "connect from anywhere" settings button.

What have you got set in there? It sound like you are trying to connect to via a secure gateway (which you have not got / have not setup correctly)

The screenshot says the certificate was issued to "HOME-SERVER" - it will only work if you access it by typing "HOME-SERVER" into the browser. So you either need to bodge the client to make that work or change the certificate

He's connecting to "home-server" as you can see from the screenshot, which is a bit odd because thats who the cert was supplied by + issued to so not entirely sure wtf is going on with it really, never had this problem before as it should just ask you to "trust" it regardless.

Personally I would get hold of the certificate and install it in to the trusted root on the client pc you are trying to access from, does WHS have a cert share like sbs?

how would i get hold of the certificate and install it? and also im trying to connect to the server by ip 192.168.x.x would this cause the error? and also internet explorer picks it up as 'Certificate Error'. another problem, when i try and connect to it using the domain i have setup, it comes up with the box to enter username and p/w but it wont accept the right ones?

thanks

If you are using the IP and the cert is issued in the name of the server then that'll be enough to upset it. Try using the server name, not the IP

In the RDP client, click on options, then click on advanced and change the Server Authentication to Warn me, or Connect and don't warn me, then try again.

thanks for the replies, it was because i was trying to join via IP not the address. so it is now working

thanks for the help :)
