Hello,

Im looking to make my home server a bit more usefull, i currently use an iOmege iConnect and plug two usb hard drives into it and it steams media on them around my house and lets me share the files.

Problem is, its too slow. All the pc's and media players in my house are linked up all through ethernet, only wifi for the laptop and iPad.

My solution (in theory) build a rig cheap from old parts i have lying around. ive got a NZXT PHANTOM case on the cheap from a certain auction website. Its going to be a standart system, i have two 1TB sata drives with my current media on them, i can take them out of the enclosures, and i 2TB drive going to waste in a draw!!

The idea would be to build a rig with all these drives in, and get another 2TB, or maybe 2 more depending on space and money i have, and set up a raid.

This is where i need help, I built a gaming rig and "servers" is a whole new kettle of fish for me and i dont know much what im doing or what i need so could do with your advise.

Objectives :-
- The server be able to make two backups of all my media, One on each of the 2TB drives (i want two copies of my back up)
- The server to be able to take a backup of my gaming rig in another room and the laptop (all conected with ethernet
- I need a media streaming element, IE be able to stream films saved on my 1TB drive to my PS3/Apple TV

if people can help me work out what new hardware and software i will need it would be great.

Thanks

I'm running the following:

AMD x64 2400 single core CPU 1 Gbyte of DDR2 RAM
OLD HP mATX motherboard
20GByte IDE Boot drive
2 * 1Tbyte HDDs
1 * 2Tbyte HDDs
2 * 240Gbyte HDD as RAID1
4 * NICs

NAS4Free (which was freenas 7.x) OS

I use it for media streaming, uPNP (DNLA, PS3 etc)
SAMBA shares (networked drives)
iSCSI Host (hence 4 NICs) 3 used to connect to my ESX servers
1 NIC for everything else.
WebServer

I've used it to stream 1 HD and 2 SD film over copper to various devices at the same time with no problems.

Just any low spec'd PC will do, perhaps something like this?

Gigabyte H61M-S2PV Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
Intel Celeron G530 2.40GHz Socket LGA 1155 Processor - Retail
TeamGroup Elite 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED34096M1600HC11DC)
