I'm hoping to build a new box for home which would have many requirements.

Firstly I'd like to use VMWare Server or ESX for multiple VM's on it as my desktop is struggling to run DC's/Exchange/WSUS on 4GB. I fear very much if I try to put a couple o' citrix boxes and clients too. The whole idea of this is to help me finish my MCSE/general sys admin tinkering

Also, in my old age (and maybe working as Sys admin) I've become quite paranoid about data and back everything up mercilessly to 2 x WD 500GB NAS boxes through scripted tasks or Acronis

I was thinking of building something along the lines of...

-Q6600 (Prob SLACR, as it has 4 cores for little cache (geddit?))
-2 x 4GB OcUK value ddr2-800 kits
-Maybe MSI Neo2-FR (as it supports RAID 5 and 8GB RAM)
-4 x 640GB drives (in raid 5, giving be nearly 2TB storage :) )
-random quality 500w PSU (Antec/Enermax, whatever is cheapest (suggestions?))

This would also mean my router will have to go as not only has it become unreliable but it only has 4 x 100Mb and I'd now need 5 or more ports preferable Gb

What would be the cheapest/sensible way to have say 8 x Gb, Wireless(not fussed what speed) and cable/adsl routing? I can't seem to find one box to do it all.

Would the above system run ESX? Would I be able to get drivers for it, especially the RAID5?

Am I just plain nuts going for software RAID 5?

Just as a footnote, I doubt very much I'll be overclocking this system (but of course it will be tempting:D )

All suggestion to the many Q's welcome

doubt esxi would see the sata raid, you may get it to see a single sata disk if you pick the right board, check a whitebox forum.
My esxi server has an intel matx, q6600, 8gb ram but the storage is on a thecus n5200pro(5 x500gb raid 5) iscsi, local disks not seen by esxi. Currently ticking over running 11 windows & linux guests :)

The performance of esxi over vmware server is considerable, even better now its been released free of charge.:)
I did however start as you are currently suggesting with an intel matx board, e4400 & 4gb ram with 5 sata disks & hardware raid running 2003 server. On top of that vmware server & my exchange, dc, isa etc etc running + the whole machine as the file server & terminal server.
Esxi was released & we were looking at it for work. I has it installed on a usb stick & had never had any success booting off usb on any of my other machines & I tried it in this hardware one day & it worked! with the exception of no visible disks.
I had been wanting a separate nas for a while & the thecus 5200 pro fitted the bill, quite quick for a home nas + did iscsi & nfs so I could store my virtual machines on it. Also it became my main file store, this was pricy, £500 or so. Yes I could have build one for a lot less, but it would have been in an ugly pc case & I just wanted something simple that worked. The 5 sata disks went straight into this.
For good measure I got a q6600 & an extra 4 gb ram for the intel matx board. I already had an 8 port netgear switch to tie it all together.
This has been running successfully for 6+ months now, very happy with it. Looking at vi client now there is an xp torrent, citrix secure gateway, isa 2006, linux mailserver, citrix ps4.5, pron pc :D, dc, exchange, solaris etc running using 3.83 gb of ram & 776 mhz of the available 4x2.4ghz cpu.
I would definitely recommend esxi, but to save costs a nas is'nt really necessary, just ensure you get a compatible motherboard.
