Home server: WHS vs 2012

First I will play in VMWARE ontop of my Windows 8 build but I would like to play more with Servers, I've used 2008 2012 but also Home server which is discontinued now?

I don't really understand why as the Home server market is huge: anyway based on Windows 8/9 wins for me but the Home server edt had addins or something.

Media Server
Active Dir
Download torrent/nzb/ftp
User name accounts hold data here
Backup and a cloud drive
Intranet? maybe for home?
May host a site or something

What I am asking is can Home server do anything that normal 2012 can't? Home have any media feat or summit? I know the configure your server looks better/easier. Also who has a home server and what else you use it for?

I had a WHSv1 box and now have WHS2011, I use it for sharing, client backups and Plex so for me its a simple box that doesnt really do all of what WHS2011 does let alone what SE2012r2 does, I am currently considering moving from my Gen7-N40L to a Gen8 unit and dropping SE2012r2 on there though but I think for what I will use it for thats a bit of overkill..
