Hi, I got an old comp I want to do something with and so I came up with a server. I want to have my own email address eg. [email protected], website host and FTP server. Is this possible can some one tell me how to do it or or some links, what OS will I need? Thanks

Well you'll need to buy the domain, is it available?

What kind of website will you be hosting? Most residential lines arent up to hosting full blown sites.

In terms of software you could do it with IIS or Apache, or Abyss web server software that will also do FTP.

IIS is on Windows XP Pro, Vista Bus, Servers.
Apache and Abyss run on most version of Windows and Linux AFAIK

What kind of hardware are we talking here? Think we will need more details?

Running your own mailserver can be a pain in the ass.
You are also generally not allowed to run public access web and mail servers on your consumer connection. People do, of course, but just so you know.

If you do continue this endevour you would be far better off using and learning Linux.

Alternatively, if you're just trying to turn an old box into something useful, get a proper vhost for your webstuff (£30-£90 per year) and turn the box into a NAS or something? Or donate it to a friend or family member?
