Am totally new to home servers but am thinking it may be the way to go.

What I am wanting to do is have a repository of data I need to back up, also all my movies and music then using my wd live stream the films via my home network to my downstairs tv.

Kit I already have:

Gigabyte P35C-DS3R mb
1GB Ram
x800 gcard,
4 * 250 gb hard disks
2 DVD RW's
spare case

So all I need is a low power CPU and a power supply, what would you guys reccomend?

Other option is to just purchase a NAS but cost wise I may as well use all my old hardware and use the raid onboard to protect from failiures also running costs will be negl;igable well compared with the additional cost of buying the nas box.

Also what cheap / free software can I use to facilitate this home server / pc Nas box?

regards,

Matt

if your going for home server for media, your going to be needing GigaBit atleast?
Does your board have GigaLan? your router / switch?

I set up my home server on 100mb, was so slow... 8mbs trans speeds, upped to GIGa wth some PCIe gigabit lan cards, 8port giga switch = 54mb/s.

Since, added a Qnap Nas.

SO, way up the costs of the equipment Compared to a Nas enclosure.

Are you going to be using a wired or wireless connection?

I'm gathering the parts for exactly the same thing but was going to stream to the WD TV Live wirelessly.

Edd,

It is going to be a wired connection as wireless in my house is very hit and miss.

mast3r,

The board has gigabit connection but it will be over 200mb homeplug DLINK connectors.

As for power useage, how would this compare with a MITX board and ION processor.

Matt
