Hey guys.

Ok i spent the whole weekend building desks and rearranging furniture and have decided it's time to sort out the network while im at it. Right now im using a rather crude setup using Internet Connection Sharing, which requires 2 PC's to be turned on. Annoying and expensive.

Im not sure how im restricted though, so i've drawn a picture below using expensive design software, so i hope you appreciate the effort i've put in. This is the idea i have in my head, but i wanted to ask if it will work.

network.jpg

The red box is my USB Cable Modem. It's an old Webstar something or other that came with Telewest, before it became blueyonder, before it became Virgin. I cant see the model number since im at work, sorry!

is it possible to connect my mum's PC to this using a USB cable (indicated in Pink), and to ALSO then run Cat5 to my router (which was made in 1970)? Or is the cable modem only going to work with either USB -OR- Cat 5, and not both?

The router is a 10baseT thing made from tin with little rainbow coloured writing, so we know its old. I will be replacing it at some point.

EDIT-

My boss came, accidentally posted whilst trying to alt-tab.

So yeah i'll be replacing it eventually but not this month cause im broke.

So basically will the above work? i'd rather not spend any money if i dont have to.

Thanks

emm no using usb and ethernet will not work afaik, i also have that expensive software but am at work jsut now so dont want to be seen drawing pretty pictures.

anyway.. put the router into "no mans land" (right beside modem), plug the cable modem, no mans land pc and the ethernet cable (which runs into other room) all into the router there.

buy a switch/hub (switch pref), place it in ** room then plug the ethernet cable from no mans land into it, then plug all your devices (pcs, eggbox etc). this will work!

emm almost right! pink wire(network cable) goes into the green box(router)

also forgot to ask, i take you cannot move the virgin cable modem to your bedroom? or you looking to keep it in the same place?

you can get the brown box (switch) as cheap as £12 on ocuk.

You used to be able to connect both usb and ethernet to certain routers on blueyonder, but you had to pay the premium. It required a subscription.

I can't really. The cable enters the house right under the first PC. I dont have enough Cable cable (eh, no idea what its called.) to run around the upstairs hall (which is huge) and into my bedroom.

Plus if i did that, i'd need loads of cable going in to the modem, then a network cable coming back out. would be easier just to have the one cable crossing into my room if possible.

and yeah, I dont really want to pay a subscription to use a USB port :/
