Would there be any difference between using one of these as opposed to clagging a 4TB USB HDD into the port on my ASUS RT-N66U and using the share facility on there?

Will be used as central repository for Music, Movies and pics and will also be writing to it with images / video taken from my telescope prior to them being edited

Speed probably. Both solutions won't be the fastest, so probably not much difference between both options.

Can't say for certain if the N66u had DLNA features. Maybe with custom firmware it does?

A big difference in speed.

Microserver is good if you have the money to spend on it. Not sure if the cash back offer is available anymore, so you'll pay a premium now for one.

If you want good performance and more features than required, a NAS from synology, QNAP, Asustor would be good.

Just looking at the homeserver option seems a little walnut>hammer for my needs at the moment. May look at it in teh future when time and funds allow but think I will go with the HDD plugged into the router option for now and see how I get along with that

From the reviews I seen it'll be painfully slow. With the best will in the world it's never going to be very fast as you're connecting using USB2.0.

The transfer rates for the Seagate in the OP are actually quite impressive for what it is.

Just a heads up from the microserver thread in the server section but it seems the cash back is back on on the microservers again so they can be picked up quite cheap!
