Hi all, First of all i have my Media PC with a Bluray Reader installed and i am using the Onboard HDMI for video and the Onboard Optical Out for audio, The motherboard i am using is Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H, I am running the Audio through My Sony HT-DDW890 AV Amp with the Optical out.

The Problem i am getting is that Video is fine when playing back a bluray movie but the Audio is only detected as PCM 96, i know that PCM is basically stereo and 96 is the sample rate but i want it to run in Dolby digital surround sound, Do i need to get a soundcard in which this is decoded to output although im sure that the AV reciever can decode this.

What am i doing wrong.

Thanks

You are doing nothing wrong.

The only 5.1 soundtrack you will get via optical on blu-ray is Dolby Digital plus & the odd DTS track. Hi-def surround sound formats are routed via HDMI (your board doesnt decode these either, but it will output a 5.1 PCM track instead)

If your amp doesn't accept said PCM via HDMI (& from the specs it doesnt look like it does) then Stereo via optical is all you are going to get.

on the other hand if your amp accepts 5.1 analogue use analogue leads from your board instead (which is what I'm doing temporarily)

You should be able to get a DD 5.1 soundtrack from the disc if it has one but you will need to change your settings to output the sound via bitstream instead of pcm.

Is there a soundcard i can buy with Optical out that can do this, I checked in Powerdvd when playing back a Bluray disk and that reckons its playing in Dolby digital but still only getting PCM through the optical out.

Thanks for all the reply so far.
