more than happy with my 3x24" 1080p setup in the office but need a bit more desktop real estate at home.

currently have a single 1440p AOC 27" monitor as main screen but need a bit more desktop space.

ideally I dont want to go quite as space hungry as the work setup so either a single bigger monitor or dual 27" 1440p would be the preference but need something that will handle some decent gaming use as well for when i'm not working.

current thinking is either a LG C1/C2 in 42 or 48" or a matching pair of 27" 1440p screens

suggestions and thoughts please guys and girls

I keep recommending the Alienware AW3821 to anybody that will listen - It's pricey, but if you can get a deal on it, it's fantastic for gaming, and more than enough space for work as well. It depends on what your budget will stretch to, and how much room you have. Also, if gaming, what GPU you will be using to power these screens.

currently running a Radeon 5700 gpu atm. markets a bit tough to try and get a sensible replacement.

5 foot desk at home hence no bigger than 2x27s

The GPU market is mad right now, but the aw3821 will leave a lot of headroom for when (if?) prices come down again. You can always run at a lower resolution for now, and know that you have extra performance in the monitor moving forward. Upgrade the monitor once, do it well, and it's probably more beneficial in the long run, but obviously within budget.

Depends how close you'd be sitting I think. OLED screens are fantastic, but I wouldn't want one as a full time desk monitor. Burn in is mitigated with tech these days but not completely gone (as far as I'm aware) so would hesitate for use as a monitor. Also, 48 inch screen when on a desk just seems too big. From a sofa, it's perfect, however.

Also, if performance of a 5700 was a concern, it would fare better at 3840 x 1600 than full 4k. I don't know how well freesync would work on the alienware though - it may well be fine, but I'd check with someone who actually knew on that.

I wouldn't go for a 42" for an every day work monitor. I tried one and it was painful to use after a few hours - too much looking up at the top of the screen. If your desk is quite deep and you can position it further back then it might be an option however.

Freesync works well on the Alienware - I have an RX 6800 and although I did have an issue at first, I was able to fix it relatively easily (basically had to use CRU to reduce the VRR range down to 20-120hz). No idea how widespread this problems is as I couldn't find any other reports of it happening, so might just be a peculiarity of my setup.

Two screens, blergh, neck ache.

5120x1440 like the Sammy CRG90 or G9 give you the real estate of 2x 2560x1440 screens, with ultra-wide goodness, and no bezels. Highly recommend.
