Hi guys,

I started this 7 days ago and the kit says that after 7 days when all the frothing ect stops to put it into the keg. Ive done this and then it asked to add the suger which was half a teaspoon to every pint. As theres 32 pints worth ive added roughly 80grams of sugar.

My question is, is that a bit excessive as another online guide said to add 50 grams...

On a brighter note it smells gorgeous and seams to be fairly strong. Ill let you know in 3-5 weeks.

Just got to be patient and wait now :( How can i wait!

That was quick, so what ive added should be good?

I know when you first start, the more sugar and yeast (In ratio) the stronger the beer. I put slightly a bit more in, and also the kit said to make 40 pints but i was advised to make 36 as it will yield a richer bitter.

Next step is to make a nice strong muntons one as this is a £7 kit.

ive never used a kit.

Rotten fruit, yeast, sugar, fermenting bin = blind drunk 6 months later.

Pictures please !!!

Of what lol?

It went from a brownish liquid in a huge tub, to a brownish liquid in a sealed keg.

Ive been taken photos as ive gone along, so i will post a tutorial!

But smells gorgeous, another forum suggested tasting a small bit, was actually nice, but aftertaste was horrid, thats apparently why it settles for at least 3 weeks.

But ill let you all know how it goes :)

I have bad memories of home brew. My mate decided to make his own. It looked like ****, tasted like **** and gave everyone the ****s the following day.

Never again.

Yeah i read some really bad experiences, but i have a homebrew shob next door so alls well. Sterilising for 8 hours ect. Lots to do but at 17p a pint you cant complaina nd so far so good!

Once you add the cost of the time, sugar, brew chemicals and everything else....it will work out a fair bit more than 17p. Unless you want a kit or brew that tastes so rank no one would touch it even after filtering.

To make a good brew you are looking at decent kits (usually priced £12-£25), proper smoothing and improver chemicals and decent bottling and storing.

I used to do ale, beer and lager brewing as a passtime along with wine brewing, liqueur brewing etc, but gave up when the cost of it in the off licences came down so much. It just wasn't economically viable or enjoyable (a half decent pint will set you back over 60p plus the time), and most of the time will be spent thorougly washing the stuff and sterilising it properly - and it annoyed me having to wait days on end as it matured. It usually turned out decent enough - but it wasn't worth the money anymore and wasn't something I could play with for an hour a day. A hobby is something you should be able to do anytime.

IMO the easiest thing to start brewing is mead.

Can do it pretty quickly and there are a few foolproof recipes out there.

17p a pint?:)

Is it any good? I might have a go at this:D

It smells gorgeous.

the equipment is a one off cost, but i bought the kit of £6.99 although you can buy more expensive kits ect, adn *** sugar cost 79p. all you need.

£7.78 divided by about 45 pints = 17p

The laws allow anyone to buy the ktis aswell. I wish i knew that when i was 17!

But so far soo good.

Ill get a tutorial and equipment list ect goign if anyone is interested?

Can I ask what the total list of equipment you bought was? How much did this set you back?? and how easy is it to get this going? :)

Cheers, J

The total cost of equipmetn was £30. I bought everyrthing new, you could buy it second hand.

So it works out with the kit to be about £40 in toal for your first 40 pints. Thats £1 a pint but then after that you dont need to take the equipments price into consideration... so its works out to 15p-50p a pint!

Second hadn wise, barrel £1-5, Keg, £5 - 15, so its possible to get the equipment for less than £10

Guide is now here:

Its worth it, im goign to another home brew party tomorrow, i love the variety. A mate of mine has put twice the ammount of yeast and suger into his kit and its ready. Using a hydrometer at first predicted a 14% bitter. :s worries me! One nice noght for me!

Nice :)

Its fun and doesnt take long, In total its about an hours worth of work cleaning it ect but the time is in the fermenting and brewing.

I now own 3 kegs so ill be turning over 40 pints a week, a keg a week and a week in the fermenting barrel.

Ive got a muntons premium to do next :) Cost £19 for the kit so about 46p a pint. I usually pay £2.50 a pint for the exact same pint in my local.

No, More sugar the better

Not at all, not only will it change the taste, the alcohol will kill the yeast and just leave you a sugary drink. It will also cause the bottles to exploded.

Most homebrew yeast will died around 7% alcholo unless you make it with wine or other special yeasts.
