Hi,

I would like invest in some homeplugs so that my electricity line can be used to send my internet round my home. I am completely inexperienced at setting such a system up.

Currently, I have virginmedia internet through a cable modem. My computer is connected to the virginmedia cable modem via an ethernet cable.

I was advised that I should buy a rooter, and a set of homeplugs. The system would then run: virginmedia cable modem > rooter > one cable to my current computer, and another cable to the homeplug > my other computer would then use the 2nd homeplug to access the internet.

Is this system correct?

Given this is correct, I had thought of these items:

and

Thank you for all help and advice.

Yep, sounds like a fine set-up, but for best results the two homeplugs need to be on the same ring main.

I can't say anything of the two chosen items, as I have no experience of them, but as long as they both work as they should this setup will be fine.

I've used the same set of homeplugs in about 3 properties now. They are very much just plug in and forget. Used over different ring mains etc too I believe. Now I HAVE only really used them to get internet to different parts of the last 2 properties so I can't vouch for speed etc but they've been fine.
The ONLY hassle I had with them was adding 2 extra to an existing set. You basically have to physically plug a computer into the plug and set password etc or the whole thing is a MASSIVE ballache.

Thanks for the reply. What is a 'main ring'?

I had thought of perhaps buying 2 extra plugs also, to give extra internet access flexibility. Could you tell me how you did this? I imagined that it would be simple, like internet to rooter to 1st plug, then 2nd, 3rd and 4th plugs would pick up the internet?

A ring main is basically the mains electricity (which the homeplugs use to transfer data) - and each main has its own fuse - typically per floor.

Wikipedia is probably a better bet to look it up, that explanation is rubbish...
