Hi all,

Am looking for some "future proof" homeplug/powerline adapters - 500MB or the 1G suckers and from what I can gauge at the moment, the 1G adapters in some instances run slower than the 500MB units? Just wondering what peoples' experiences are - what seems to be the consensus on the fastest/best units on the market at the moment at either 1G or 500MB speeds?

Cheers :)

Depends how fast your internet is? Anything up to 50MB and the 200MB plug would be fine. Anything over 50MB broadband i would suggest you buy the ones posted in the above link

Yeah, I've heard about issues with the 1GB plugs - I imagine it might be because if you're connecting to a 1GB port via a GigE adapter on your PC, the TCP SYN packets will try and negotiate large window sizes etc, which if the actual speed is running at say 10MB or whatever will cause issues. I'm pretty happy with rolling with the "500MB" plugs (which I've read get real world speeds around 120-150MB throughput - more than enough for the FTTC implementations (which are all QoS'd through ISP's core networks anyway...)

I use the Netgear 500mb ones with pass through.

In one room get 420MB, 380MB, 140MB & 120MB. Notice how the later two drop and the reason for that is dodgy wiring. Those two sockets have basically been extended from an existing socket rather than being incoroporated into a mains loop. Everywhere in the house where there is a proper loop the worse I get is around 240MB. Those worse two jump upto 320MB if I find the nearest socket to them in a loop! Those figures are from the netgear software but at the 420 & 380 I get my full 100MB whereas at the other two I get around 60 so can't give exact speeds as haven't tested them using files yet!

I would say though instead of a more premium brand I'd go for the Solwise 500MB pass-through ones if I had the chance again. Especially as the internal components are the same just different on the outside. Only advantage of the Netgear is the firmware upgrade etc is a bit more user friendly whereas Solwise you gotta go and find what you need on the forums and they don't really give you much support on the firmware side on their main page. However I hear they are quite good if you contact them.

Then again apart from one pair I bought my other two pairs of the Netgear off eBay so got em for like £80 a pair which wasn't too bad considering they are like ~£120+ brand new.

Theres a guy on another forum selling a set for £50 for the netgear ones. I was going to cancel my order with Amazon but the product had already been dispatched :(

TP Link ones are good though never had a problem with my 200MB ones. I think they might also be based off the Atheros 7400 so they will pretty much be the same as the Netgear and Solwise. I'm not 100% sure though.

i have trouble with my tp 200 and interference. With no phone chargers or energy saving lamps plugged in I get reach 77mb quite consistently. For every charger or lamp plugged in I lose about 10%
