Im after a homeplug powerline kit of some description but know nothing about them. I have read a couple of threads on here but want to know what might represent the best starter kit at present. I have ADSL and not cable if that makes a difference?

Many thanks

You must make sure that they are the same speed or they wont work together.

The power line must be on the same 'ring'

Your need one connected to your router and one for every other device.

Plug and play.

Simple.

Really.

Honest !

I recently bought the Belkin Powerline AV. Alas they aren't cheap (I paid just shy of £100) but they are very good. As swordfish says, they really are that simple to install. I did some brands I didn't know going for a lot less online, but I have no idea if they are any good. I have heard good things about the Billion ones.

What speed do you want? Is it just for internet access, or do you want to transfer large files over a network as well?

I picked up some Zyxel homeplug kit when it was on offer. I have their NBG318S cable router with homeplug (there is an equivalent model for ADSL) and two PLA-401 plugs. They run on the 200mbps Homeplug AV spec, although I only get about 5MB/s - this is about normal for the technology. Very easy to set up and works perfectly. I paid about £100 for all three devices, but that was on sale pricing.

Its purely just for internet access. No transferring of files needed.

I would endorse the good value zyxel kit and their support for it,
also devolo (but they are dear). Both have kept plugging on with the technology.

some of the generic kit is pretty good as well but not all (sorry some are competitors)
not generally in favour of the netgears and linksys of this world they seem to chop and change chipsets and technologies

PS the adapters do not have to be on the same power ring main, in most houses they will work on differnt rings or spurs provided they all connect back to the central consumer unit.

Probably as good a place as any to post this. Mate of mine recently purchased some 200mb Netgear homeplug adapters, and on Thursday someone from Ofcom knocked on his door saying a neighbour had made a complaint that short wave radio interferance had been noted in the area. Turns out the homeplug adapters interfere like no man's business, bad times if you love ham radio :D
