Anyone any idea how these things work security wise ?

I've set a pair of 85mbps ones to :

Router - Plug A - Plug B - Gig switch - PCs

I know there is encryption software etc, but is this necessary ?
What is the likelihood of someone next door say plugging one in and picking up my network ?

Any opinions ?

Pretty unlikely I would say, but it only takes a few minutes to set it up.

With mine all I did was run the software and change the network name from the default, other than that I think the traffic that passes between the devices is encrypted anyway.

Both next door neighbours will be on a different phase's than you , so they wont be able to connect to it

As regards encryption , just setup a really really difficult network name ( use numbers and other funny chars %^$" ) for both devices ,
that way no-one can listen in without knowing the exact name.

The network name is used as the encrption keyfor send / receiving messages.

I'm pretty sure the fuse/breaker box makes the signal stop. Anyone sharing you're mains (eg housemates) has access, anyone not on your mains doesn't.
