Is 85Mbps Homeplugs ok for 20Mb Broadband cable internet as i was told that homeplugs do not always give the full advertised speed due to electrical noise on the mains.

To connect the Homeplug to the cable modem do i need a Router or a Network
switch as i'm some what confused too what the difference is as i don't need wireless.

Neither wireless or homeplug give the full speed advertised.

There's every chance the homeplug would be fine at that speed of broadband (not that your likly to achieve it) particularly if you follow the advice given by the makers re extension plugs, etc

Router is the usual way to issue and share IP addresses but

If only one PC needs broadband and no other ethernet devices then you could just go

cable modem> ethernet patch cable>homeplug>mains wiring>homeplug>ethernet patch cable>PC

cable modem needs ethernet output and this is just a fancy way of not having to run a new cable from cable modem to PC

I have a pair of 200Mbit Solwise AV home plugs that link my garage office to my house and i get around 45-55Mbit/sec througput on average.

I have a couple of the standard homeplugs ( lower down the scale than the 85mbs) and the pc that is attached like this has identical performace on the internet compared to my main rig directly attached to my 8mb broadband modem/router

Homeplugs rock- we have the 14 MBPS ones and get about 8-9- it varies between rooms, but well worth it and speeds are generally fast enough for most things.

Thanks for the feedback

I only want the Homeplugs for internet connection so the 85Mbps look like they will be ok and half the price of 200Mbps ones.

What are they and will they solve my wireless drop problems and dodgy connection when playing fps?

An alternative way of connecting 2 ethernet based devices using mains power wiring in your home, come in various speeds, very reliable and really easy to set up compared with wireless (in fact zero configuration unless you want to set different security settings).

May help if your problem is due to the wireless link, if its a router or isp problem would do nothing.
