My GF's dad is looking at some homeplugs so that he can plug his laptop in down in the garden, or in the garage - the WiFi doesn't stretch to both without moving the router from one end of the house to the other and back, and even then, the signal is just about bordering on "adequate"

Therefore, the thought of a couple of homeplug adapters popped into mind. I will admit I know nothing about them!

The garage, and the garden room, are both on separate RCCD to the house (but all the same side of the meter) - would there be any major issues here? The internet connection is only ~4mbps, so huge bandwidth requirements aren't needed, but a more stable connection than the wireless is.

There's a fair chance they'll work well enough for a basic Internet connection. You occasionally hear of people accidentally connecting to their neighbour's Homeplugs so anything is possible.

there is no way you can connect to next door using home plugs unless you have them with wireless on as well, as it goes through your wiring, unless you live in a flat etc, even then that would be remote, as it works off the ring mains, and without the other plug at the other end, in the same pair, it wouldn't connect, they would have to pair it with your's. in theory yes, in real life no.

just buy the cheapest pair you can find, they work very well, and you can even bridge a ring main with another pair if needed, if your house has more than one ring main

If you search this forum you will find reports of Homeplugs connecting between houses. It isn't common, but it does keep cropping up.

Out of the box Homeplugs use standard encryption keys. If you buy multiple sets they'll work together without any configuration.

It's one of the reasons that setting your own unique encryption keys is important.
