Homeplug setup required.

Hi all

I have 3 computers connected via ethernet to my router. I'm looking to get rid of all the unsightly cables snaking around and replacing them with a homeplug setup. If I'm barking up the right tree, I think I need 4 plugs; one for the router and 1 each for the 3 computers. Or does the router need 3 plugs, one for each of the computers on the network?

You'll just need four of them.

No chance you couldn't just tidy up the cabling?

I'm decorating and I really want the cables up and out. Plus I'll be moving soon and want home plug in the new place rather than cables snaking everywhere.

Yep. One downstairs, two upstairs.

In that case, 4 adapters will do you fine. You can of course connect a switch to any of them if you need extra ports.

this will mean you defeat the point as you will have a box and cables coming out of it.

I got the impression he didn't want cables running from room-to-room etc, pretty easy to just connect a few devices that are close to each other to a switch which then feeds into the adapter though.

Is there any point in me getting the 500mbps homeplug when my router is limited to 100mbps per ethernet port? The 200mbps homeplugs are far cheaper.

Yes, the speeds mean little in practice (you won't be getting 500Mbps from them) but the 500Mbps ones will be faster. Depends on your needs really.

Nah, stick with the 200s.

I have 2. One for the router and one in my bedroom hooked up to a switch for desktop and 3 consoles and a STB. Have been pretty impressed with them to be honest.

You can get ones with built in wi-fi now if that is any use? I'm tempted for my tablet.

The heaviest use will be streaming files to the media centre downstairs (TV episodes like The Simpsons etc). Although saying that, I do have fibre broadband at 37mbps, and quite a consistent 37mbps at that. Will these slow me down?

Potentially. It really depends on your house wiring and the distances really. I have TP-Link 200Mbps ones and they're fine, but it does limit my access speeds from my PC to my NAS a bit.
