Im considering buying some homeplugs (not sure about make yet) to connect up my machines at home.. I think, considering the price, I'll go for the 85mb version.. They all seem to have roughly the same design, but will they all use one plug, or are they too big, so it end taking up 2 plugs? (will you be able to use the socket next to it, assuming you have a couple socket on the wall).

What sorts of speed will I see with the 85mb version when transferring large files?

Speed is hard to judge, it depends on you house wiring and how far it has to travel from socket to socket. I have the 85mg plugs and getting a faster transfer rate than I ever did with wireless.

I do use two plugs side by side in one socket. One for the 360 and one for the pc. With the 3rd plug coming off the router downstairs. Never yet lost a connection.

Which make do you have?

Solwise. I actually bought 5. Of the 5 one had to go back as it was faulty. Got a replacement within 3 days. 3 are for my set up and the other 2 went to my nephew for his 360 and his wireless in an old house kept dropping him from games. Like me he's had no issues since.

I've heard you really need the larger ones for HD streaming but 85 does me fine for the 360 and my desktop. I dont transfer files.

I have a pair of the 85mbps Solwise units, two would sit side by side in a wall socket separated by the on/off switch, but if you have to plug them in a standard 4 point extension lead they block off the adjoining socket.
As said it's hard to say how well they will work until you buy them. They were useless for me connecting to a server in the loft (couldn't even ping it), but excellent down the other end of the house. Monitoring software reports speed at 50-ish Mbps, throughput tests I've done report 12-ish iirc.

I use the Devolo 85 plugs, the size isn't too bad, i can fit a standard plug in the sockets next to it, although anything with a built in transformer might have difficulties in an extension socket (as stated by Jay above).

Speed wise i usually get about 30-50 depending on how many PC's are connected at a time.
