I only recently found out these existed.

What are the downsides except for the price compared to a wireless USB device? afaik I plug it in the living room, connect it to the router, then in my room the other one, and thats it?

What are the chances it doesnt work, or whatever can go wrong with these?

My USB wireless is pretty bad, and the homeplug I want are a lot more expensive, but if it gives me my stable 30mb/sec and a good solid ping, I dont mind spending more money.

It is plug and play I assume, no installations required? Any brands which are advisable?

Generally speaking they will give you a better/faster/more reliable connection and you will get better pings.

The only downsides are that there might be problems connecting them together if you have weird and wonderful wiring in your house. You might also miss out on the maximum speed if you cant connect them directly to a wall socket since connecting them to extension leads degrades the connection slightly.

That was my thought, until i could not get any working at a constant decent speed tried in two new buildings, maybe i had a faulty pair - but nevermind.

I think it all depends on the wiring in your house. Is it a newish build or old? I have Devolo 200AV ones and they are great. Stream 1080p mkv movies to my play station without a single frame pause.

But as I said it depends on your wiring. Try and borrow a friends if you know anyone. Or order them online and send them back if you dont like them.

new as in under two years, both of the properties :(

Shame, but ended up running a flat cat5 under the carpet - but it goes over the carpet grip thing under the door and under carpet either side seems to work just fine anyway!

I was wondering about this as well, the wiring in the house is about 17 years old, a few years ago we added an extension to the back of the house all newly wired up, both pc's are kept upstairs in the same room, one is in the old part of the house connected to the router, one in the new part, im currently using a rather rubbish usb wireless adapter on my pc in sig, unfortunately ethernet cables are a no go.

I've got homeplugs running to the garden shed at the bottom of the garden. They seem to max out the 100mb switch that shares the connection between laptop & xbox :)

Yeah unfortunately you are at the mercy of your wiring and it is difficult to trace the problem if there is one!

I haven't had any problems with my Netgear ones though so I'm happy :)

I have a netgear pair (200mbps).

There very good. I have one running into a gig switch. I live in a newish house and I get 192mbps from upstairs to downstairs.

2 things I find thoe. 1)If I turn my server on they lose connectivity once reset there fine. 2)They will lose the connection with each other. But this is very rare and a reset is all thats required.
