Homeworld 2 crashing to desktop

I've just got Homeworld 2, installed it OK, patched it, game runs fine at the main menu, but whenever I try to start the singleplayer game it crashes to desktop as soon as it's finished loading. I've searched the internet but can't find a solution to it. :/

I'm on XP Pro with a Radeon 4870. Latest drivers etc.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Solved it through trial and error. It crashes whenever shadows are enabled. :|

I've not been able to get homeworld2 working properly for a long time now :( 3 graphics generations at least (7800 -> 8800 -> GTX280).

I get absolutely terrible performance (<1fps) when I swing the camera around and certain sections of the horizon come into view, and this has grown progressively worse every graphics generation. I'm guessing it's a nvidia driver thing, if it works okay with your 4870? I'm all patched up, of course.

Anyway, it's a shame, since it's a cracking game and I haven't played it for years!

Nope I'm getting the same thing as you. It's almost unplayable. :(

I know a lot probs occur when you patch the game and try to use a saved game. I got round it by starting the game again, a drag I know but at least I was able to play the game, and every subsequent saved game loaded fine. Unfortunately, I don't know of any cure for the sudden drop in framerate, happens to all users i think.

I did a clean install, and tried both with and without the patch. Unplayable in both cases. Odd that the performance seems inversely proportional to GPu speed

Such a shame as it's a cracking game that I'd love to replay
