What a waste of time!

One of the reasons I bought a Honda was due to their reputation for reliability and after sales, well that's a complete joke.

Since I got the car I've had the famous "sticky steering" problem which seems to plague the Civic range so I booked it in to be checked out. I went along with about 10 pages of information from other Type-R owners who've all had the same issues which were resolved by fitting a new steering rack. I explained the symptoms and but the mechanic who test drove the car just said it was normal and that they weren't aware of any steering rack problems (even though I thrust 10 pages of other owners with the same problem in his face).

They're going to do a 4 wheel alignment next week at a cost of £75 to me. Without that they won't even consider a new rack.

Any ideas what to do next? Can I try a different dealer that knows what they're talking about or can I go direct to Honda UK? I really don't want the CTR at the moment and if it doesn't get sorted I'm getting rid of it, probably for a WRX or a 182.

Try another dealership, or write a letter to the person in charge of your garage. Surely with 10 pages worth of evidence as to what it most likely is, they would look into it under warranty ?

The CTR steering and clutch are crap. I'm on my 2nd rack and need another, but my warrenty just ran out.

The steering rack problem is well know but some dealer's still try to give you the brush off. Best bet is to try a different dealer. But you will be needing a new rack every 20k miles :(

So that's this world-famous Honda reliability I keep hearing about.... :p If I was in your place eidolon I'd go direct to Honda UK rather than through a dealer, it seems to get better results on the very few occasions I've been in that situation.

Another dealer, then a letter to Honda UK if you don't get what you want.

Luckily my CTR has been as good as gold (pass mot today, 0 advisory) but there certinaly is a major issue in general with the steering rack on them. I just hope mine doesn't go on me as it's done 33k now and with no warrenty at all they aint cheap, fingers crossed I got one of the 'good' ones.

Give it the usual kick up a fuss with the Manager routine, it's un-cool but required to get a result. It's always a shame warranty work causes so much agro, partly understandable from the dealers position regarding work-shop targets etc but in-excusable regarding customer satisfaction/relations, particulary one who has researched & provided documentation concerning the problem.

My mate just got landed a £240 bill for a new 'alarm board' on his 02 Civic TypeR. Apparently this is also a fairly commond problem & one which may re-occur.

Honda - Make very very good engine's & well screwed interior's, but not very good at suspension, steering & electronics...

It's usually the bits that Honda don't make which cause the issues.

They don't make the alarms, plus they changed manufacture for the faclift so no more probs with it.....wouldn't surprise me if they didn't make the steering rack. Not that i'm a Honda fanboy or anything :P

go to another dealer, my citroen had ECU problems one dealer said there was no problem took it to another they said oh yeah its a common fault we will fix it under warranty, job done car works now
