Hong Kong 2013 - In Tilt/Shift

This year I thought I do something different, shoot the entire trip with my 45/TS. I come here a lot, used 16-35, 50mm & 35L twice so why not try something else. I always say there is no better way to get to know a lens than to use it all the time so this is it. So there will be tilt shift effects galore here before people say the effect is over used

. It is a learning exercise to see what works and what doesn't and it will be interesting to see for myself as well since I have not shot with it exclusively for any length of time yet. The other challenge is to get good at manual focus in a moving environment.

I will update at the end of each day. Today just landed and walked around near the shopping mall near the hotel so only did a few shots.

absolutely NOT a criticism of your pictures, but the photo's have a kind of "fake" look to them. I like them!

The 1st one looks like a made up scene like something from "legoland" or alike.

Colours are lovely.

Not a fan of this use (the whole minute model world idea) of TS lenses but the photos themselves are nice. If mini model world was your aim then #1 works really well.

Nice idea and I like them. #4 doesn't work as a TS shot but if you're intending on just using the lens for normal shots then it works as the depth of field looks normal.

I like 3 but the composition could be better with the stairs (bottom right chopped off and although the focus it's not central).

I love it when it looks like photo #1 where you can not be 100% sure if it is a model or not.

Love 1 and 2, they work for me as you used the effect well to isolate the subjects and give the miniature world feel. The effect does not stand as much with shot 3 and the subject is not as obvious. I think its a great idea to just stick to the one lens to get to know it. I find it hard enough nailing the exposure and focus in manual for quick shots let alone judging the tilt and shift. Do you pre set for a shot Ray and the wait for a moment or are you adjusting as you go?

Samyang are bringing out a TS 24mm f3.5 around May time, probably around the 1k mark (US pre-orders are $999).

Nice thread Raymond, I'll be keeping an eye on this. It's about as close as I can get to an actual holiday abroad!

edit: Are you going to do any tilt shift videos?

Rojin - I don't plan to do any videos, or at least I didn't. I am trying to get the grasp of stills first before moving on.

That only simulate one aspect of Tilt/Shift.

You can't fake No.7 for example.

It seems you are going to HK quite a lot for the past 3 years. I use to buy all my camera gear from Wing Sing but due to the mainlanders and the Government giving $6K to everyone, everything has shot up!

Was going to pick up an 85mm 1.2 for example, its only £30 cheaper than the UK
