"Tory leader David Cameron will call for greater understanding of teenage “hoodies”, saying that they are trying to "blend in" rather than appear threatening. "

I think that the above quote from the BBC News site is absolute ****!

I know that I'm old but in my experience, the large majority of people wearing hoodies (up) do so because they don't want to be identified; obviously, if it's pouring with rain etc, it's common sense.

I think that we all know the groups of youngsters who do this "hoodie" thing are wanting to look intimidating and really are likely to be up to no good.

Not everyone who wears a hoodie is a wannabe gangsta, but IMO most are.

I'm not looking to start a youngsters V oldies war here but I want to know why anyone who is not a wannabe gangsta or gang member would wear one (especially with hood up) knowing that most people have that stereotypical opinion (bad) .....?

Sorry, just got back ....

As many have said, just because one wears a hoodie doesn't make you a thug.

My question was; given that ther is such a bad reputation for people wearing 'em, why would you carry on wearing one if you are an ordinary guy/gal ?

I'm sorry but the "I don't give a **** what you old people think" still leaves us with the stereotype in most people's minds.

Unfortunately, I do judge people wearing their hoodies up as thugs, as do many, many more ordinary (older) people.

One guy jogging past in the appropriate "sports gear" wearing his hoodie is one thing ........ half a dozen or more young people standing around or wandering along with their hoodies up is something else.

you post **** about everyone who wears hoodies are wannabe gangsters, i suggest you post in future threads that arent one sided. if you dont wanna get flamed.

and *puts hands up

Maybe you should learn to read and you would see that I posted a couple of times saying " not everyone who wears a hoodie " etc

Then maybe you should learn some manners.

I was trying to say that I'm sure we all understand that they are comfortable, warm and in many cases practical ...... and as I said before, some guy joggin, skating, training or just walking is not the problem, it's the group of people (not JUST chavs) hanging around (hoods up) apparently doing nothing except trying to look intimidating, that many people, not just us oldies, find scary.

I really didn't mean to start a us V them thing here; I just found it odd that some (ordinary) people are happy to wear 'em whenever, with the hood up, even though that seems to be the warning sign to many people.

Never mind, let it drop ........ I don't think that the debate is going to go very far beyond "it's fashion and I like 'em".

Thanks to those who took the trouble to put together an articulate, reasoned point of view. :)
