I've recently had some kids vandalizing my property during the night, and I plan to install security cameras to catch them in the act.

What I need to know is what kind of device/expansion card do I need to connect 2-3 cameras to my PC, what kind of performance impact I will see, and what I should look for in cameras and their positioning.

i used to use a webcam for this when i had problems with kids around my area, recording the video ended up taking up too much room on my hdd, and when i stopped the recording it took an hour to save a 3 hour recording :( i ended up just getting an old vcr from a car boot sale and hooking a cctv cam up to that. if you want more cameras you can get a switch type thing that records all the cameras on one screen, splitting the screen into 4, i think this way is much more reliable than running it though your pc

get in touch with your local police station and see if they can get you a cheap cctv kit, even if they wont give you one they would be able to tell you where to get one, how to set them up and the most effective positioning and stuff for your house

Hey guys,

There is a cool little utility called webcamxp that you cna setup to record motion with a standard webcam. You set the motion tolerance and then chose to record from there onwards or just to take a snapshot at that moment. You cna also get it to upload the photo to a web/ftp server so you can view the image anywhere.

Just a thought.

:)
