OK, not what you thought.

I was just talking to a couple of friends about how things were ages ago when we had our 14.4 modems and had problems like downloading a 5mb file and having the connection break when you already have 90% done.

Then we have this that we had to listen to all too often:

Ok and? Yes it was a hideous and expensive time to be an internet user don t miss it at all.

My sister was notorious for this! :mad:

her and her bf at the time were pathetically inseparable, when she was at home, he'd phone up every 10 minutes or so. Never long phone calls, just all the time. Of course the phone ringing cuts off the internet. Used to boil my blood trying to play Team Fortress at the time

My memory is pretty vague of it now but I do remember if you did a clean install of Win 98 you had to download immediately Kerio firewall(5mb or so) and during that time the blaster worm would arrive on your PC. Sometimes you managed to download Kerio before the BW, cut your connection install Kerio and you were ok. Fun days.

My mate had a 14.4 modem in 1995 ist time i had seen the internet he was showing off his pc it was painfully slow i told him waste of money this is never going to take off

Before that it was all about US Robotics 56k modem and Claranet

Somehow I convinced my Dad to order ISDN lines and was using 'redhotant' as our ISDN ISP.

Back in the day you would get in to a counterstrike beta match first and get a headstart.

ISDN was the holy grail for multiplayer games back then.

Yep, before anyone had the bright idea to put you in a lobby and make you wait.

Lots of games were literally - Map loads - Spawn first - Run around getting the good weapons before others spawn in. 7200RPM hard drives also helped.

I remember upgrading my PC to get into games faster. RAID 0 on really fast drives helped.

Crikey, I don't recall that at all - I used to install Windows 98 frequently back in '98 and never had any such issues... maybe you were the source

I remember this most vividly in BF1942. I had a 10000rpm WD Raptor at the time & iirc a 9800pro, & would always spawn first on 64player games.

When we first got 56k, my mum didn't want to pay per minute so she went for one of those deals where you pay a fixed price but are forced to reconnect after 2 hours. I loved Age of Empires and spent many an hour playing it, when I heard about AoE2, I knew I had to get the demo. I tried many times, but I never did manage to download that 40mb demo before the 2 hour limit disconnected us.

OMG just remembered I am sure there was a deal going round for 56k that gave you unlimited usage online...

Cant remember the name but was something like 40-50 quid a month. (This was before ISDN)

Could you not use a download manager program? That was my best friend when i was on the 2 hour plan with Freeserve! Cant remember the name now.

edit:- Getright was the name of the program!
