Hey everyone, had this issue several times before after upgrading my laptop to 8.1, I just downgraded back to 8 in the end, but was a hassle!

I decided to try 8.1 again the other day, I regret it! It's made the whole system so sluggish, feels like im using a celeron 1.5ghz and 2gb ram :\

I've disabled superfetch and windows search, but obviously search being disabled means I can't just tap into start menu and find a program or doc, which is very inconvenient!

Also, something very odd is happening if I look at resource monitor, it seems to be randomly reading files from my data partition and desktop, as seen below:

Is this it indexing files? I've had these files on the laptop for months now, surely they are indexed now? I miss windows 7 :(

Don't disable indexing and superfetch, they improve performance.

One Indexing has finished, it'll be quick.
Superfetch pre-loads things you use often, leave it on.

Are you using an old hard drive? Does it have any issues in Eventviewer? Shouldn't get problems like this really..

Also, buy an SSD, best upgrade ever.

Ok I'll re-enable them, should I just let my laptop idle for a few days? It's the drive that came in the laptop, not actually sure what it is..sec

oh it's this - http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd.php?hdd=HGST+HTS541075A9E680

Also I don't know why I said "sec", this isn't instant messaging XD

That HDD explains it, but it does perform nice with the instant on feature, boots from standby in like half a second.. I use a samsung 840 evo in my PC at home with RAPID enabled, it's bloody fast! :)

I'll check eventviewer.. I have been looking at getting the drive upgraded, but I'll have to do a fresh install and don't have a windows 8 disk :o

I would upgrade to Win8.1,remember to get lastnights update 1 for Win8.1 via Windows Update then I would run Ccleaner and System Ninja(junk cleaner tab) both are free, check Reliability History in Action Centre as well to see if any issues in there, also double check all drivers(latest for Win8.1).

I only use Seagate mechanical HD which is cached to my Crucial 64GB SSD so even that its still very quick, don't disable any services let Windows manage the system.

What anti-virus are you using?

I would also run memory test and malware scan(use malwarebytes free version) just to be on the safe side.

I'll run CCleaner now :) I'm only using windows defender, I've heard-tell that it's pretty much as good as most 3rd party programs, I use ESET endpoint at home, it's really good, nice and light on resources

I'll try system ninja :P also, I've just noticed that my gpu isn't showing in cpuid or hw monitor, and I get warnings about running on cpu when I start wow, weird thing is I can still run it on ultra settings, so clearly the gpu is doing something, I only updated it the other day! :(
