Horrible hangs, possible codec trouble?

Hey everyone,

I'm having some trouble with my PC and it's really got me stumped. After watching videos (usually .mkv) I find that I get 15 second freezes where my monitors go totally blank with no cursor or response from the PC. Even the application on the LCD display of my Logitech G15 keyboard locks up! This happens only when I try to do the following I try to do the following:

  • Press ctrl, alt, del (and again when existing the logon screen)
  • Try to run a program which requires administrative privileges.
  • Switch between windows using the windows key and tab whilst there is a 3D game running maximised.
  • Lock and log back into the PC (freezes on both times)

Once these symptoms appear, the only way to resolve the issue is to restart the whole machine, which is needless to say a pain in the behind. I assume because of how it only starts happening after watching videos it could be a codec issue but I really don't know too much about codecs etc.

It might be unrelated but when running a 3D game full screen my internet connection will randomly drop out (unable to ping the default gateway) The adaptor has to be disabled and re-enabled to restore connectivity. This is also annoying but unless it might be something to do with the issue with the freezes I can live with it.

My PC's specification is in my sig, I also use a Dell 1708FP as a second monitor now. My Windows install is fully updated and I am using v11.2 AMD Catalyst drivers. I have tried using K-Lite mega codec pack, CCCP, VLC media player, windows media player, foobar2000. None of the programs/codec packs make any difference to the situation.

As you can imagine, trying to Google for this kind of screen freeze problem is pretty fruitless, I would really appreciate any help you could offer me!

Turns out that these hangs occur even without watching videos first, it starts happening about an hour into the uptime. Now I don't know where to start to fix this... Here's a Hijackthis log if that's any help:
