Hi

im currently with 1&1 web hosting, under their business plan, the only problem is that they limit the MySQL database to be 100mb and i think 10 simultaneous hits... and i really need something bigger than that. are there any hosts out there who only let you buy the database part of the hosting?

then in theory i can tell the script to get/write information to that database.

Any ideas? does this exist?

In theory you could but in practice, the latency would be your downfall. There are also inherent security issues using MySQL over the web.

I would find a better hosting provider and move your site across :).

i understand where you are coming from. Do you have any ideas of any hosts which are better than 1&1 (UK)?

I currently get

3GB webspace
25GB traffic
8x MySQL databases (100MB)

for £10.56 per month.

i love 1&1 but its just the database which is letting me down, any ideas of same (or better) spec webspace and traffic, but a bigger MySQL database(s)

Thanks

Look at www.ochostreview.co.uk and contact the hosts which interest you - you may find that some do not limit MySQL database size (within the realms of your disk space allowance), some have limits of X that you can upgrade for £Y, etc :)

For what it's worth most hosts running cPanel probably don't have automatic MySQL quota control, since it can be a little bit fiddly!

You might look at this (Advanced).

Less than you pay now and probably - what am I saying, of course they are - a damn sight better than 1and1 - useless they are.

You can customise your database size within the quota (total). They are good and fairly priced on that package.

smids is to Vidahost as Muncher is to Register1? :o
I liked them - replies to questions within 30 minutes - excellent speeds and on the ochostreviews - come out pretty much top based on reviews. They are good at what they do and costs are very reasonable, 'tis all.

Ahhh, you mean affiliation? No - consumer here. /me waves.

I have morals - as do other posters who won't blatantly flaunt themselves. Other posters also post about hosters they've dealt with e.g. JonRohan and 2host.co.uk.

Will someone give me money for putting the most 'others' and 'posters' in 3 lines? Not exactly succinct was I?

Hosting companies are like pop bands. Vidahost is the HG&P host de jour! But soon it will fall out of fashion when a flashy new one comes on the block.

Register1's glory days are over, and I don't see tsoHost recommended as much either. Give it a while, and there'll be another member-run (naturally) hosting company that will get recommended without fail. Not that I'm cynical or anything :D.

Personally I think we should extend the no business interests rule (iirc largely in respect of the host pimping and sniping that used to go on), to cover no "hosting recommendation" threads. I don't really see what hosting's got to do with HTML, Graphics or Programming anyway. IC&N should be the place, along with the rest of the ISP threads. How about it ;)?

Several got moved to this forum recently... frankly I don't know where to post. I'm a complete noob to all this malarkey - need to read up on Linux (for my NAS server at home - no experience whatsoever) and now scripting and HTML - fun, fun, fun - might sign up for some evening course or something.

There have already been new hosts, but I'll be darned if they can push said folk out the way easily :p

There are more than 3 hosts run by members...10+ iirc. Those are just the best three that serve the typical OcUK visitor ;)

That's probably the origin of the rule (it was before my time), but one hosting company did quite recently have its name banned for (I think) those reasons - random, unsuited pimpage iiirc - not sure - it was before my time as a UB and those Dons are tight-lipped :p

I've always found the HG&P / IC&N / Windows forums a bit confusing/blurred to be honest, but it seems HG&P is the place for website-related-stuff. That said, IC&N does occassionally get the higher-level questions about dedicated servers and networks, etc.

I vehemently detest pimping and I guess that's why I got made a UB..I keep a fairly sharp eye on HG&P, and hopefully an impartial one...I have told people to edit their posts if they've seemingly randomly/overly pimped anything I'm involved with. I need/want no tricks for my business and although a few people here know who I am, I don't make it easy to work out :) (as is the case with the other members I think - some here have absolutely no mention, infact, there's still one I know from elsewhere but don't know who he is on here....)

Personally I think we should just have a sticky called "LOOKING FOR WEB HOSTING??? CLICK HERE FOR ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW AND DON'T EVEN CONSIDER MAKING A THREAD", and then just have the content as a link to OC Host Review :)

Me too :)

There's already the pretty obvious one with 'Host Review' in it - people just never read stickies :(

Indeed there are always new hosts on the horizon. The majority of which we all know are usually going to be pretty short-lived. If anything, the fact that certain names get mentioned repeatedly for the length of time they have is a testament to their stability.
Those ones were just the first that came to mind, and no particular reason for the choice. I have a fairly good idea of what's what and who's who :D.

Yeah - I spend about 2 weeks researching SATA-II for you sorry lot, get it made into a sticky only to find people asking the most basic questions which I've answered in my sticky...

Yes, I intended to be hypocritical. :D

I'd like to think I'm also the same. I do not just (as others do) just put companynamehere.com every time they see a hosting thread. I will only recommend somebody if the post is right.

Also, for the record I receive absolutely nothing for recommendations, its genuine good customer satisfaction. I also use a number of hosting companies and not just one.
