As title suggests, would appreciate what companies you use for the above It will mainly be for showing pics. Any price information/ likes and dislikes will be appreciated. i know this could be in another part of the forum but since you guys have sites for similar purposes i thought i'd ask here first

the middle package on www.vidahost.com would be pretty ideal imo

1gb of space - enough for photos (websize)
50gb bandwidth - it'll hold it's weight a lot
domain comes with it
cpanel 10 is pretty decent
loads of mysql databases.

you might find you need one with higher diskspace though, so that'll come to someone else's recommendation. (media temple if you're richer)

Depends on how 'easy' you want things to be. Hosting your own site is pretty straight forward using one of many companies (I use 1and1). If you are unfamiliar with building web pages then some companies provide tools online to assist.

However, if you want to simply host your photos without having to build your own complete site, then you might like to consider using something like smugmug or zenfolio. I have just started using zenfolio and am reasonably pleased with the service (up to 1Gb storage which increases by 1Gb each year you stay with them for $25/yr).

i am looking at something i can build a site with - so something with a simple template. However i can knock up a basic website in no time. 1gb Should be okay - its not going to be every photo that i take on there - only the ones i dare share.

I'm using my personal web site mainly for friends and family with some photo galleries (generated using Photoshop Elements) of specific things but mostly of my kids. I then link from this site to my Zenfolio site where I'm starting to host phots on a bigger scale.

Originally I intended creating my own database in which to hold my photos as part of my web site however, I've never got around to producing anything that I'm happy with. This will be a longer term project for me so in the meantime I'm using a dedicated photo hosting site. Zenfolio allows you to generate RSS feeds so I use these in my personal web site to generate dynamic content of new additions to my online gallery. From these thumbnails people can then link to my Zenfolio site to view images of different sizes if they wish.

Have a look at ochostreview.co.uk, check out the recommended hosts that meet your needs and fire off a couple of emails testing response times etc. :)
