Hi guys. Just a quick question regarding hosting.

My hosting came up for renewal a few days ago and I decided I no longer wanted to use the current provider. To be honest he seems like a fly by night kind of fellow, his prices are stupid and his customer service is appalling.

I informed the guy that I did not want to renew my package, but mentioned i would like time to backup all emails related to the account. What sort of period should he have given me to do this? Are there any laws relating to this?

He has deleted everything without giving me time to backup my emails and is now stating that he wants £89 for him to do a restore from a server backup. Is he being fair? Or more to the point is what he has done legal? The emails contain invoices and many other business related things.

Thanks for any advice.

How did you access the email? Isn't it backed up in Outlook?

Tell him you clearly stated you wanted time to do a backup and that you will not be paying for his mistake.

bit out of order of him to do that, i host for people and if someone didnt want to stay with me i wouldnt delete their account for a while, especially if they asked to have some time to back up

What did your contract say?

This is also a good reason to keep regular backups.

he certainly isn't being fair but, assuming your contract had run out he had every right to "delete" your data, and he also has the right to charge a "reasonable" cost to recover the back-ups and send them to you.
