Hosting question

When I upload a folder to my hosting at the moment I am putting an index.html page in there to stop people viewing the folder contents.

Instead of doing the above each time, what can I do to make the folder display a HTTP 403 forbidden or something when uploading a folder without having to put an index page in there, but the user can access a file if they have the direct link?

Options -Indexes in .htaccess then place it in the root of your webspace or the topmost level you don't want listed, +Indexes in any you do want listed.

You can password protect the site using cPanel?
