just installed a new cpu and updated the bios.

e6850.

keeps going blue screen for a second then resetting, every 1-2 hours. cpu temps are at 30c idle.

just turned off audio in the bios so it doesn't clash with my X-fi. still no joy.

Intel E6850 C2D
4 Gigs of OCZ Plat Rev 2
BFG 8800 GTS 640MB
X-FI Extreme Gamer
Asus P5B-E Plus

any suggestions would be great, go back to older bios perhaps? my computer experience is not that great but i know what to do when told.

thanks in advance.

Make sure to reload "safe" BIOS defaults, then run the rig like that for a while, see if the instability is gone.

ok, just go into bios and reset to defaults? or is there some option for safe?

Don't assume 'defaults' will work. I have had several incidents where new builds wouldn't boot into windows using them. Especially SPD's and ram settings in general. Have a look, and set manually if need be.

Try going to device manager in windows, click on processor and then scan for hardware changes. Only a thought, probably won't do anything. RAM spd is normaly more relaxed than what the manufacturer says it will do, best to set it in the bios. Setting bios to default is also a requirement after flashing it.

ok i'm confused, i go in to ram timings and i need to set

cas 4
trcd 4
trp 4
tras 15

but only cas is there the rest are called RAS# with stuff after them and rather then having just numbers it says like "6 clocks"

so i go to jumper config as well and set that to dram 833hz, thats easy enough?

its all pretty new to me so bear with me.

thanks all for your time.

6 clocks=6 so 4 clocks=4, set it to this.
Tras = cycle time
RAS# to CAS#=trcd
RAS#=trp

ok checked device manager only thing with a ? was sm bus controller or something. scan on the cpu but all looked fine.

ahh ok so just change all the 6 clocks regardless of what they are called to 4?

one of them is on 16 so i take it thats the one i set to 15?

ok great the 16 one was actually 15 already so i left it and changed the other 3 to 4-4-4.

so now in the bios its 4-4-4-15. all done all working.

now when i changed the jumper config/ dram freq from auto to 833hz it wouldnt boot. it would cut out and reset just before the windows loading bar. i've changed it back to auto now and i'm gonna see how she runs.

any idea though?

It should be 800 not 833 which is odd. Main problem I just realised is that memory needs about 2.0-2,2 volts, otherwise will be unstable and won't take those timings at that speed.

From what you have said your ram was running loose  , what about the voltage? does that need upping? check the box or manufactures website to be sure.
edit: just clocked what you said about 833, and you already beat me to it anyway.
See how it goes on those timings.

yep cool, i'll leave it on 4-4-4-15 on auto freq and see how it goes. i'll let you guys know how i get on.

thanks for the help all.

YAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! it seems to be running like a dream now. thanks soooo much everyone in this thread. all great info.

take care
