It seems load of people are reporting hot Core 2 chips (me included)

I'm wondering if there is a common factor... possibly the motherboard?!

I have an Asus P5B Deluxe
E6600 L628A
Ninja Heatsink & Fan

Idle temp 50 degrees @ stock.

Can anyone else with similar issues please post their specs

Cheers

Did you finish this?

Jokester reckons some conroe heat sink spreaders are not that flat.
One way to find out if thats true is to make it flat.

See post...

My CPU was concave and was running as stupid temps (E6300), so I had to lap it...

Also, you want a layer of AS5 that is a micrometer thick.. I literally just reapplied within the last 15 minutes, and boy I must have messed up the first time round as I've lost 15'c from my temps just by applying the thermal paste properly.

Gigabyte S3
E6300 (ill get batch number for you but its 2 weeks old)
TT120

30 deg c idle 40 deg c full load both cores. ;)

How are you measuring your temps? You need Intel TAT for an accurate reading directly from each of your cores.

mine ran hot also when i raised the Vcore ever so slightly...but its been totally stable at 60-70degrees OC'd to 3.2-3.3G's...full load. However, I last time i tried to reset the cooler I did notice that contact wasnt being made over the entire surface (footprint of the AS5). Maybe worth lapping the CPU then????

Anyone else done this and can offer some advice on best way to do...i dont want to damage my 6600. Also...best paper to use and where to buy it?

Also as above link posted....mine was a 29B if I memeber correctly!

Thanks

Not yet...

I've actually got somany factors that could effect temps at the moment...

1st there was the stupid amount of paste I initially put on.
2nd the base plate of the ninja needed cutting which I did but haven't tested yet as I was waiting for some AS5 paste to arrive
3rd The paste has arrived today with a new Tuniq 120 cooler
4th Being an impatient git I started lapping the cpu

So... once I've finished lapping the cpu I'm going to put it back in with some AS5 & the ninja and record the temps.

Then I'll try it with the Tuniq 120 and see if thats any better.

Why am I so desperate? A mate just got a Dell 700 XPS with the same chip as mine and his is idle at 20 degrees!

Mind you he can;t really overclock it on his dell ;)

Again get him to check with Intel TAT. Plus his is at stock vcore and clocks and these Conroes idle at very low temps when setup correctly.

I was there when he checked it with TAT 20c idle 35c on load - Not sure what Vcore he had though... either way very impressive next to my head boiling cpu

Sounds like he likes a cold room :p I get pretty much that with water cooling

Hmm, I had the same problem with my E6600 until I found out that my CPU fan was loose, I yelled at myself for 30mins because I had made such a stupid mistake in my build :D

Do Conroe based laptops not have some power saving gizmo software if they're not kept active they throttle back to conserve battery pack power? hence much lower idle temps.

Nice job on the Contro Ihs, I'm sure your glad ro get those temps down, looking at you photo's the cpu defo looked higher on the edges making it concave which as you found out was a disaster to cool until you lapped it.
