HOT CPU Help!!!

Hi folks, Have a bit of an odd problem.

A couple of weeks ago I started off with this spec in my older machine:-

Generic ATX case with 235W PSU
Chaintech Ultra Zenith mobo
Athlon XP2200+
Coolermaster Aero 7 Heatsink/Fan
512Mb kingston DDR400 RAM (2x256Mb)
64Mb Chaintech Geforce 2 MX400

over the past couple of weeks it now looks like this:-

Same case but with OCZ stealthXtreme 500W PSU
Chaintech Ultra Zenith mobo
Athlon XP3200+
Coolermaster Aero 7 Heatsink/Fan
2Gb Crucial DDR400 RAM (2x1Gb)
Sapphire Radeon X1950 Pro AGP


Now, using both BIOS and the Chaintech DigiDoc utility I'm now seeing IDLE CPU temp of 79-80dec C!!! Side of case is very warm to touch and HSF is ROASTING so I have no reason to doubt the temps being reported. The heatsink on the X1950 is also very hot.
Now, I had noticed yesterday that temps were high so this evening I thought I'd check. I switched it on and left it for about 45mins-1Hr doing absolutely nothing but showing me my Win XP desktop.
The PSU was the last piece of kit to be changed and it 'seemed' to be running normally (WAY cooler) prior to this. The PSU itself seems in good working order i.e switch on rear lights up and top fan spins (I have even crudely modded my case with a big hole above the PSU exhaust fan to let the heat out!!)

Any ideas on where I should start to look or things to check??

Better start with the basics as your post was skimpy on details or your knowledge/ability level. Please tell me that you cleaned the CPU & HSF and then used new thermal compund when swapping out your CPU... and didn't just replace the HSF??

I'm no electronic engineer but have built up a few systems now and am competent in handling computer components. As for knowledge....just say what you need to say, and I'll let you know if I comprehend you or not . As for HSF..yup, used new compound when I reseated the CPU.

I may as well state the obvious............is the fan on the cooler plugged into the mobo?

How many case fans?
Are they working?

None, the PC usually runs with the side off

Replaced the PSU with the crappy 235W unit and its running fine it seems???????????

I DID notice that the mobo manual shows the following connector pins

MOBO requirements ----- OCZ 500W PSU
Pin 1 -- 11 -------------- 1 -- 11
3.3V -- 3.3V ---------- 3.3V -- 3.3V
3.3V -- -12V ---------- 3.3V -- -12V
Gnd -- Gnd ------------ Gnd -- Gnd
5V -- PS-ON ---------- +5V -- PS-ON
Gnd -- Gnd} ---------- Gnd -- Gnd
5V -- Gnd} ------------ +5V -- Gnd
Gnd -- Gnd} ------------ Gnd -- Gnd
PW-OK -- -5V -------- PWR-OK -- (*blank*)
5VSB -- 5V ------------ 5VSB -- 5V
12V -- 5V ------------ 12V -- 5V


Now pin 18 on the mobo needs a -5V feed which the 235W PSU has but the 500W PSU does not. Could this be related to my problems??
