Running a c2d E6300. It's always read quite hot in my Asus P5B board, both with an aftermarket cooler and the OEM cooler.I thought it was just the bios being a bit over zealous, but I've moved across into a mITX board, yet with both the OEM and aftermarket cooler, it's still idling at around 50c and under load its hitting 80c+

I've also tried two different thermal compounds, bit still no luck.

That sounds way too hot. What voltage are you running the chip at? (not what it is with speedstep if you're using that)

And what are the rest of your specs, mainly case and cooler?

Voltage is the default around 1.3v - I'm using an Intel DG41AN (previous board was an Asus P5B)so no ability to change this.

I reapplied thermal paste and changed the cooler again but still no luck.

Ambient room temp is around 21c

The case is an ITX case (previously in a full tower), but i don't have the lid on so the whole motherboard is exposed to the open air with nothing at all covering any part of the board.

The HDD is not close to the board, nor is the PSU.

Interestingly the Northbridge heatsink gets buring hot.

At 50c the fan spins around 800rpm. At 70+ it spins over 3,000rpm.

At 3,000 rpm idle temps are in the region of 46c still over 20c hotter than ambient.

The system is using integrated graphics and has 4GB DDR3 ram.
