Hot MacBook Pro - Google Chrome Worker

I've got an old 2009 MBP (C2D 2.26Gz with 8GB RAM) running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. It has started to run really hot recently and it looks like Google Chrome Worker is stressing the CPU to 90% most of the time.

Any idea why this is and how to fix it?

A quick google for "Google Chrome Helper" pulls up plenty of people with the same issue, give some of their recommendations a try and see if they help.
