we have one of those sata caddy things so that hdds can be swapped in and out at leisure, plugged into the onboard sata controller. however errors are appearing in the event log and reading around tells me not all sata controllers allow hot swapping

soo i need to find a pci one with at least one port which will allow me to change my drive every day without powering down (for backups). Most dont specify in the description though....

any ideas?
thanks

there is a sata card I've seen with an external sata connector
can't remember the make though
I assume this will be what you're looking for!?

Not all SATA is hot swap, some sata controllers dont support hot swap at all, others (Intel Badaxe motherboard for instance) supports hot swap, but only if the SATA controller is configured as AHCI and the proper drivers installed. In 'IDE Emulation' mode hotswap is not advised.

I am currently using some kind of onboard SATA on a very cheap ready made PC . I am getting the following every time i unplug the drive:
Code:
The device 'WDC WD40 0JD-22JNC0 SCSI Disk Device' (SCSI\Disk&Ven_WDC_WD40&Prod_0JD-22JNC0&Rev_05.0\4&23799d8c&0&000) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

Its listed in device manager as a "VIA SATA RAID Controller" i dont know any more about it than that :o
