Hot Water Dispensers - Who's got one and are they any good?

As title really, are they worth it over a regular kettle? We need a new kettle and am thinking it might make more sense to get one of these as we don't need to boil the whole thing every time...

Just put the amount of water in the kettle that you need.

Inlaws have one - not sure why.

Just put x amoutn of cups of water in the kettle. My kettle will boil enough water for 4 cups of tea/coffee in under 45seconds.

Had one in the UK, but lost it in the move years ago, keep meaning to get another.

I wouldn't spend loads of money on one to replace a fully functioning kettle, but if you need a new kettle and make a lot of brews, no brainer. More efficient, less waste, less rescaling.

I had a Tefal One Cup years ago, it was ok for instant coffee when you need hot water, not so much for tea where you need boiling water.

I boil water mainly for tea so I like it. I can put a mug with a tea bag in under it, hit the button and leave it to brew for a few minutes.

I use mine exclusively with filtered water and it's never needed de-scaling. I use a separate brita filter jug though.

I would not recommend it as a complete kettle solution if you need to boil water for other things.

We had one a while ago. It was kinda cool. I make 90% of hot drinks just for me, so it made sense. It sucked when I wanted to fill a saucepan full of boiling water though. In the end, we just went back to a kettle. I wouldn't want to have both cluttering up the work surface.

I'm confused as to how they would use more electricity than a kettle?

I would've thought that keeping 2L of water heated to near boiling point 24/7, would outweigh the costs needed to boil a little water in your kettle?

You're not thinking of the one cup dispensers like in the op, you're thinking of something else. The one cup dispensers just boil enough water for one cup of boiling water at a time.
