I have an XFX ATI Radeon HD6870 and I think it may be getting a bit hot.

If I play a game that puts it at high usage I have to run the fan at 70% to keep the temperature less than 90°C

This test shows hugely different temperatures to mine

If I let my pc idle with 0% GPU usage but put my GPU fan at 100% the lowest my GPU temp will go is 55°C

I have re applied the thermal paste which only made a difference of about 4°C and got me to the temps above.

The fan noise so loud it's annoying my family so something has to be done.

But what?

What is your case airflow like?

Can you do a test with the side cover off and perhaps aim a fan to the gpu.

Is it a reference XFX 6870? Maybe it has a huge buildup of dust inside the cooler? This happend to my 4890 card. I cleaned it out and it reduce temps by at least 20 degrees at full load. Then a bit more when i was smart enough to buy some thermal paste.

I've just moved my whole pc into a new Corsair 200R with 120mm Fans everywhere, I thoroughly cleaned the entire heatsink fan module when I took it off to re apply thermal paste too.

Do my temps seem high?

So i've got rid of the stock cooler and installed a Gelid Icy Vision rev.2

So far with the fans on low enough I can't hear them and my temps max out at 63°C

very pleased, shows what a pile of **** the stock cooler was.

I've always liked the look of those coolers, not over the top, yet they add a nice touch to a card along with good performance. Sweet results.
