Hotmail Account Hacked

As thread title suggests...

I tried logging on to MSN last night, and it wouldn't let me, and i tried getting into Hotmail normally and it wouldn't let me. I just assumed services were down or something...

Checked again this morning to find i still had no luck.
Checked my work email, which is also on hotmail, to find it was working fine :(

I used the link option to access my main account, which worked ok. I went to the password changing screen to see that someone called Mr Asergaya was the holder of the email account, and obviously, he must have changed my password to his own, so i had no luck with changing it back

I also saw that i had some emails from eBay, stating the changing of some passwords... im guessing he somehow got into my hotmail account through eBay (i've had issues before, and stopped using eBay because of it, but hadn't physically closed my account).

Contacted Hotmail people via the help pages, described my problem in detail, i received a lovely "personal" email stating "If you have forgotten your password, this is what you should do..."

Replied to that one stating its not a forgotten password etc, yet to hear back. Worried as it took them 4 hours just to send that email...

Any recommendations, im concerned as the account i've used for about 6-7 years and all my product registrations and support are registered to that account, as well as personal emails etc.

Will it be fixed? Anyone else had this happen?

Sorry for the long post, just feeling a bit "invaded" :(

Yeah i've run about 4 different software's, nothing comes up.

And i never open dodgy emails, or any kind of links etc, im not that stupid!

People throw around the word "hacked" too freely, theres no chance someone hacked into msn and data mined your username password, whats happened is you have gone on one to many porn sites and got a key logger and failed at using antivirus software. Or someone you know has guessed your secret answer.

Yes of course, that's exactly it, how silly of me

Hmmm,

Basically, i'll reiterate.

My eBay account was hacked, they got my details such as my email address etc from that, they then somehow accessed my hotmail account, which has a different password. I haven't used my eBay account since about april time. I don't know how they got into hotmail from that, but it seems a bit coincidental, that i found (when i linked from my other account), my work ( aka job searching better sounding email address) eBay messages saying about password recovery, which is the result of the guy using my eBay account to change the password to something of his choosing. How he got my hotmail password i DO.NOT.KNOW.

The people who have suggested things such as dodgy links, forms are wrong, as i haven't gone on any disreputable sites, i use my favourites only, which are all well known, popular sites. I use NOD32, update it everyday, scan every day. I use Real-time protection. This is why im posting, as im stumped as to what it can be. Please don't treat me as an imbecile, who does anything and everything wrong to get viruses etc.

Do you think it'd be safe to continue using the email address once the problem is resolved, or should i abandon ship?

Why is everyone saying Gmail, whats so much better about it then?

I just don't understand how someone who has never met me or anything like that has guessed it :(

It's a rather unusual and complicated password...

I sitll haven't heard anything from Microsoft about recovering the account for me, which seems a bit poor :(

It's what im saying, i've not been careless, i honestly think someone's used some software or another to gain access. The chances of someone coming across my email address and then thinking, "oh i think his password is this" and getting it in one, are pretty darn slim to be fair. It has to be linked with my eBay account being hacked, it just has to be.

Still haven't heard anything from Microsoft/Hotmail about my account, i wish there was some kind of decent support number you could ring, or an online chat (like eBay) that you could use. :(

All i do is access my email through MSN, i honestly can't see the user error, im not being stubborn, i'd freely admit if i'd done something obvious, but i am honestly stumped. I haven't used my eBay account in months, yet the person hacks my eBay account and then my hotmail account goes haywire... coincidence? no.

I'm determined to somehow prove that it wasn't me in the wrong here.

My computer is connected wirelessly to the main router in our house, my parents barely use the main computer which the router is connected to. No one uses this computer but me.

Microsoft have got me my account back, they said that there had been a breach in hotmail security and my email account along with a few others were compromised. They apologised and didnt say anything more than that...

*Closes hotmail account*

Hotmail is crap. Only use it for social purposes. Exactly what I do, I then have my BT address for everything else and if anything goes wrong with that you literally just ring them up and it's sorted instantly.

Are you talking about the same BT here?

Customer service and BT don't go hand in hand

I doubt a nobody phoning an ISP would get through security checks that easily, but it is possible. Most calls are recorded though. you'd have to have bottle to do that I suspect - and some luck.

He means that you don't get the support of an ISP, as they have a phone number to ring if something happens, whereas hotmail you don't.

But i was sorted with hotmail, it took a few emails to convince them instead.
