Hey guys,

Is there any proven evidence that a home alarm can interfere with your ADSL connection? I ask, because that’s about the only thing left to try to sustain our broadband connection…

We have a standard home alarm (It’s not linked into the phone line) with several sensors dotted around the house. It’s never actually active, because most of its residence work from home – before any of you plan to burgle us :p

I’m thinking about disconnecting it from the mains, and removing the back up battery, but before I do, I thought I’d ask the experts ;)

Cheers,

SW.

If it doesn't go into a phone line, how can it effect it?
It can't. RedCare alarm systems connect to the phone line and, although they're now certified ADSL friendly, they coudl conceivably cause an issue with ADSL.

If it isn't connected to the phoneline, it's not affecting it. If you're going to unplug your alarm to see if there's a difference, you might as well start unplugging your kettle, microwave, oven, lights etc too.

If your connection's unstable, it's probably down to a low SNR. Check master socket to discount internal wiring. If that doesn't help then you'll need a lower sync rate - if the line manager's not doing it for you, ask your ISP to get BT to intervene.
