Hi,

Does anyone have any recent experience with removal company costs (in the south)? In a few months I'll likely need to move from a 3-bed house to about 100 miles away. This is a fairly full house, furniture + garden furniture etc so I imagine it's a full size huge removal lorry job + the travel miles.

What kind of costs might be involved with that, could it be done for < £2k? I will get actual quotes obviously nearer the time, but just useful to hear anyone's experiences to help with planning.

Thanks :)

We’re moving 50 miles and they’re using an 18T truck, cost £1300 we’re packing our own boxes, 3 bed house and both locations able to pull right up to the door.

Remembering you might not get your keys until between 3pm-4pm then the removal firm have to unload the truck, you might struggle to find a company willing to load, travel 100 miles, unload and travel home again in the same day

Where in the South? We used a local company to us, near Hastings, to move us to Lincolnshire which was 174 miles away. This cost us £2095 for a two day move.

Cost me £1,200 to move a 3 bed semi 20 minutes! Packed all the small stuff into boxes and they loaded everything into the van. Took them 2 trips.

Ive heard some horror stories about people seeing the van drive off and disappearing so make sure you check out the company first!

Also the costs will depend on if you wish the removal company to supply any boxes and if you wish them to pack everything..

I do removals for work (www.mayerremovals.co.uk), and to be honest, you'll struggle to get a decent company that's less than £2k for what you've described.

There "issues" that add to the cost that I see.

You've asked for full packing. If you pack everything yourself this saves a big chunk of the cost. you'll typically need an additional day plus boxes etc for a firm to pre pack everything.

The distance. It's not terribly far, but if you're purchasing the property you're moving into rather than moving to a rented, the wait for keys can delay things, and you can have a removals firm sat at the new property waiting for hours. This may add more costs for each hour they are there.

Any quotes you hear from others need to be within last couple years. Anything more and the prices will be far out from what they are now.

When you look for a company, look for one that's mostly local because with that added 100 miles each way, it's only going to add cost if they have another 20 miles from their start to your house.

Hope this helps

My mistake. I saw he mentioned full house with furniture etc and figured he was meaning it all needed to be packaged by the company. Op can confirm. But the point is still correct, if the op wants the removals company to package everything this adds a lot to the cost.

Free Protip, cos I'm nice.

Use this packing up time to bin stuff you haven't used in 12mths.

not in the south (thank god) but these quotes in here are very high compared to what we paid (in the midlands)

we moved house in 2021 from a 3 bed terraced house with a decent sized full garden shed, we were only moving a mile away so the
removals company used a luton, which took 3 trips all in (plus a few family car trips) with 3 blokes loading/unloading I think we paid about £600ish

EDIT, we did have to moved a 400l fish tank, thank god I had the permission off the sellers to move that in the night before whilst they were packing still, it took about 4/5 hours with my brothers help.

Can you not talk to a few lads in your family and offer them some beers for the work, while promising to keep them fed and watered during the day? Usually the promise of free grub and refreshments works, with the beer being the icing on the cake for them.

It's easy enough to google local companies and give them a call, they need to visit the property anyway to be able to make a proper assessment,. We obtained two quotes, one from a company that moved us before and another one of our relatives had used. The later one was higher than the first but I asked them if they could match the first's price and they did. We chose them because they could co-ordinate and arrange for one of our cars to be transported up, at an additional cost negotiated separately
