Hey guys,

Nearly every house on my road has been broken in to within the past few months. I need some cheap, quality ideas to protect my house and the family.

We have the following:
  • An alarm (no inside box though)
  • A dog that barks a lot
  • A light that's constantly on near the front door.
  • Movement triggered flood light in back garden.

The big problem is that the robbers are getting to the level of cheek where they just bring a ram and break down your door with force. Last night we had 3 police cars outside with dogs after a house was broken in to and three cars stolen off the drive.

These guys go up the drives and check the car doors to see if they're open, on every single house. My dad walked out of the living room to find our front door wide open and the dog sitting there looking outside.

I'm really looking for preventative measures more than "buy a gun" or "sleep with a knife under your pillow". Obviously a good place to start would be lock all doors and windows, even when your in the house.

maybe setup a cctv camera that links to your tv in your bedroom and livingroom, that way you can see them coming before they actually break in,also put 1 out the back.
if you are going to get a dog,i would suggest getting 2 so the other 1 has backup, also its scarier to see 2 dogs rather than 1 :)

How much is a one camera setup usually. I'm guessing buying more cameras are cheaper because you'll already have the monitor.

I think the main way to stop these guys are lots of locks and them seeing someone is home and awake.

you want bolts that go across the the top and bottom of each of your doors, as well as the main lock in place. Should help against break ins a little

Mines a cocker spaniel. Just sits at the door barking if he hears a noise. If someone broke in I'm sure I'd know about it but I doubt he'd go for them. I'm fairly confident he'd not be too impressed if someone hit me though.

Ours are built in to the doors so it's pretty sturdy. I just know the managed to ram in a neighbours door. Not sure if theirs was just wood though.

Make sure that you have Chubb locks fitted to your doors - Yale locks are useless.

Search Youtube for "Bump Keys" to see why.

Keep your car keys well away from your front door- put them in a drawer in your kitchen or somewhere.
