ok ok you'll ask what for...
well.. I don't really know that is y I thought of asking you guys..

U see I was reading a benchmark of some sort and it was comparing gamin diff. form 4g mem to 8 gig mem. The good thing is that the game was up by 20frames, but the diff. was that the 8gig test was with a 30% overclock as well on a quad C2D.

So what do you think..? is it worth it? Imean taking under consideration the prices nowdays... spending an extra 50 for a second 2x2gig kit, isn't really much.

and then... what about disableing the virtual mem.. forcing like that the system to use only the mem dimms.. ???

what do you think...? cause I was thinking to treat my self next week with a second 2x2 kit but if it is to loose performance for any reason... then I can deff spend the money elsewhere :D

what do you say?

Hiya,
Dunno answer to your question at the moment, But i have just this minute placed 8gig of ocz 8500 in my quad/abit ip35 pro rig

So far so good :)

Just reading and had to set tRFC to 54 in bios (somert to do with ram obviously so i'm going to read in depth)

Myself i was running 4x1gigs of ballistix but 3gig totally died on me lastnight after holding on for dear life the past few weeks lol

Will try and do some basic benchies with apps i'm used to running on 4gig and see if i notice any +/- benefits

Sorry i can't answer but would like to know from someone more memery knowledgable than myself

Cheers

I used to be a fervent "4Gb is enough" person, but actually, there are good reasons to use 8Gb if you are running Vista 64-bit, and no good reason to have more than 2Gb if you're running a 32-bit OS. In my personal opinion, of course. One of the threads posted above by helmutcheese links to a Toms Hardware article that makes for very interesting reading. Unfortunately, the whole 2Gb vs 4Gb vs 8Gb issue is still utterly clouded by what you're doing with the machine, what actual software you're running on the OS and how you have the machine configured, but there are some circumstances where 8Gb RAM will give a performance increase over 4Gb and if your requirements fit in with those, then you'd be crazy not to do it with prices as low as they are.

Earlier today I fitted a spare 2 gig into my machine to up it to 6gig.
Still managed to hit 85% usage with 6gig working in zbrush with 3dsmax and photoshop open behind it.

If you have the need for it go for it, if all you do is game I wouldn't really bother.

Well 1st impressions with 8gig

Wowsa the number of apps that can be running and not seem to bog down lol

Speed of my average apps Tmpgenc dvd athor/Canopus 3 maybe it's just me but they seem a gnats ball faster in themselves ?

Actually Canopus 3 just slowed a tad so maybe it's me lol

Really chuffed with 8gigs so far though :)

Have Fun

I been using 8 for a while now.

I got it mainly because it was cheap and I use vmware quite a lot and being able to run 5 or 6 vm's at once is pretty cool.

I have noticed that vista runs much smoother as well.

*edit* and dont disable the pagefile/virtual memory as a lot of programs are written to use this.

I have seen Firefox eat up anything between 1 and 2 gb ram so 8gb can't be bad if you got the OS for it...

Once I get my act together and install Vista 64bit again I will not hesitate using 8gb in any way.

I hit 2.02GB used whilst compiling today although the compile takes several hours, the additional RAM means the machine is reading source files and writing commits to the HD. Which as it's a MBP it has a slow HD.. so 4GB helps buckets (even if 2GB is 'free' as a disc cache).

How does your abit board handle all 4 slots used up, cos I have the same board as you. Did you have to lower the fsb or anything to make it stable?

I very nearly added 8gb of OCZ memory to my XFX 8800GTX order yesterday but changed my mind at the last moment; I'll probably relent and order it sometime next week anyway. When I first got my machine I thought 4gb was huge, but I've been surprised how many times I've come close to using it all up just by having a few programs open at the same time.

I haven't pushed it at all...it's plenty fast already and I'm a bit short on time at the moment to tweak anything that could destabilise my system...there're plenty of impressive results in the CPU forum though.
