Hi everyone, I am new here, just want see how this forum works, so I would like to post a thread like this, and have some advices from you guys.

I just bought a Samsung 1TB F3 hard drive for Win7. I used to have a Samsung IDE 160 GB hard drive before. I know is a very old one, so I would like to ask, what do you guys usually do with these old generation hardware? Sale it on ebay or just recycle them?

Thx a lot for your advices.

so that is usually where it goes, thx for the reply, hope they can find another good owner to extend it meaning. thx for the reply, enjoy

I have a tendency to take things like that apart. Hard drives are stunningly beautiful inside.

very good to hear a second reply, good point to enjoy another way. I thought ebay might be a better way where my hard drive goes.:D

looks like i post the wrong section, anyone change it to the right place?

I'd like to take apart one with more than one disk in it, but can't really tear a working 750gb drive apart to sate my curiosity. Have fun :)

edit: ^ only drive I have available, still intact

If it was used as a system drive, you might want to clear it down completely first. If you're selling it in the members market, then you're gonna be pretty safe... but on ebay, it has been known that people buy hard drives in the hopes that peoples bank details are saved on them. Even if you format it, some data can be recovered. Get some software that will run it through a 5 loop total 0 write to make it unrecoverable.

If its an old IDE drive, not many people will want these. I'd get them degaussed if i were in your position. I have 4 old IDE drives here, i'm just going to get them completely wiped at work - I'm an IT techie. Basically just saying be careful who you sell it to, and what has been on it.

You can get a USB-IDE connector to allow it to be used as a removable backup drive or a en external caddie to do a more permanent conversion. 160GB is still useful to use for backups.

thx for all your advices, this is actually a good forum, nice atmosphere.

As you guys take concern about the security details of the hard drive, I think I need to buy a cheap enclosure to make it a back up drive

I have a 150gb maxtor that i replaced as an extra storage drive for a 1tb f3 just like you, still have a 500gb primary drive so plenty of space, i have an old enclosure for ide which i might just use as an external backup and also something i can cart around, no need to sell it just yet

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-001-AK something like this might suffice, can prob shop around to get a decent price maybe?

I have a stack of old, random sized hard drives i cant get rid of!

If you want them wiped of data and chucked away safely, message me and I'll give you an address to send them to. I'll get them degaussed for you. Might cost a bit to send multiple hard disks though, but if you want them wiped, i can easily do it for you.

Yeah. Just give him the private data, he'll erase it for you...

Seriously, if you want them wiped then just use some sort of formatting program that wipes it over with 1's or 0's. Or both.

Not only would that be a silly idea... if he started losing money within days of sending the disks, then he'd have a finger to point quite easily! It was just an offer...

They have nothing of any value, all old data, you may find some old games on there, not a lot else. I can zero fill them using maxblast, (if i can find a copy!) then whack them into the skip lol..
