How accurate is the BT ADSL checker?

Hi All,

Moved house and I've managed to be lumped with a pretty crappy line.
Before I moved I was told to expect about 2Mb, but now I'm in I get about 4Mb on ADSL2+

Odd thing is that if I now use the phone number to check I get told:
ADSL - 2Mb
ADSL Max - Around 5Mb, ranging from 4-7.5Mb
ADSL2+ - Around 11.5Mb, ranging from 6.5 to 19Mb.

If I check the postcode, I get a more likely story:
ADSL - Maybe 1Mb
ADSL Max - Around 2.5Mb, ranging from 1.5-5Mb
ADSL2+ - Around 3.5Mb - ranging from 2Mb to 6MB

The postcode checker claims to be 80-90% accurate, whereas the phoneline check claims to be very accurate.

Confused!!

It depends really. When I first ordered ADSL it told me I could expect 1mbit on ADSL Max. I actually got 20mbit with Be when I got that installed so clearly whoever had the number before me lived in a different part of the town. If you've got the same number that was with that property before then it should be reasonably accurate.

On my line they were slightly pessimistic for ADSL2+ (phone number check), but the difference wasn’t worth worrying about.

For FTTC they were very pessimistic and I’m getting 9 Mbsp more than the estimate.

Couldn’t you ask your new neighbours and see if your line is typical for the area?

Broadband seems to be a bit of a mystery around here.

My immediate neighbours don't have the internet, and there is not a single wireless router in range of my laptop and even with my high powered USB NIC and 18dB yagi I can only seem to see the wireless from the caravan park about a mile away.

I have found a few phone numbers for businesses that run from home in the streets around me and every single one is not a BT line so the BT & BE checkers throw a wobbly.
