Hi Guys,

I am totally new to this kind of thing, a friend and I are going to be hosting a small LAN Party, about 5 Computers and lots of energy drinks!!! My friend has two Ethernet ports in his PC and 4 in the router, and supposedly another 4 when he gets another one. However is there any good links and advice from LANers how to set it up and what else may we need e.g. a Switch etc etc etc

I thank you all Gods of networking in advance

Oh and we have lots of CAT5 cables etc etc

id get a router / modem for the internet, why not use existing one?

then connect all pcs through a switch and connect that to router - set up dhcp on router so ip address, dns, gateway etc can be done automatically.

also might be worth getting a web server together from an old computer and putting patches for the games you will be playing on there, saves faffing around with downloads at the time (will need to download them before to put on the webserver beforehand).

My own setup is as simple as it can get

All the LAN PCs are connected to a switch

The switch then goes down to the Modem/Router

My main PC is connected to the modem router.

Of course Cable is vastly superior to wireless any day of the week.
