had NTL many moons ago and went to sky for various reasons (nothing to do with the cable internet as it were rock solid.

up until now i've been more than content with my 7meg connection from sky
but the lure of 100meg being available is tempting me to go to VM. My question is though i like to download a fair bit on torrents from various private trackers. now sky neither care or bother and i regularly leave my connection running at max for days on end (circa 50 gig/day) and never see any shaping or throttling.

my question is, how are VM with torrent traffic and will they restrict/throttle a 100meg connection, if so by how much

Yes, Virgin shape P2P and Usenet traffic at peak times - chances are it's about 75% so you'll still end up with a faster connection for P2P than you do now.

Also, the upload will be much better.

They do packet shaping which can be a real pain, using SSL does not always get around it, so you wont always get the full speed at peak times. There are other methods to get around traffic shaping, but it just depends on how much you intend to download. However 50mb is more than enough for all current online content.

If you are downloading 50 gig a day with large amounts during peak times then you may well get a letter from virgin media requesting you to stop & if you dont then they will cut you off. Some members here have had letters after downloading 350 gig in a month & if you are downolading 50 gig a day then it will only take you a week to donload that much.

On my Virgin Media 50Meg line. Since I have gotten it, it has never been throttled and for the first few days I had over 400 Gig worth of downloads.

Might not have been rolled out to your area yet, I've still never been throttled/shaped on my 50meg line.

This worked a treat! Thanks. :D

Are supernews any good? I've just cancelled my giganews subscription because I'm not prepared to pay their crazy prices anymore. There's a special offer with supernews at the minute $9.99.

Really tempted to go with them. Not bothered about retention too much also. I have 50mb so will it max out with them? Glad they support port 443.

I switched to them as Astraweb was slowing down for me in evenings. Always maxes out.

Ahhh sweeet. Thanks for the info mate. So overally you're really happy with Supernews then? Been looking at newsdemon too.

well I have been using giganews and its quite weird using SSL throttles my downloads pretty hard downloading at like 800-900kb/s whatever the time of day where as not using SSL im at full speed all the time(minus traffic shaping) so I just try to download after 9pm.

I have upgraded to 50mb i get the hub installed next Friday as apparently and seeing first hand due to there **** up the good old NTL 250 modem doesn't work with 50mb speeds.

Also with the throttling anyone tried to use anything like vyprvpn? I have access to one as it comes with my giganews service just never tried it yet.

I just download at night after 9pm keeps them from crying :)

also keeps me from crying :p lol, at the beginning it was hard it was like me want now!!!! 4 hours till 9pm!! now its just whatever hit the download at 9pm if its big if im just downloading a show thats less than a gig i just download it when i want as I am allowed to download 3.5gb anyway.

One consolation I am not holding my breath as its VM when my service is upgraded to 50mb hoping no more traffic shaping.
