How are you on yer difficulty settings?

I usually set it to the standard difficulty, but drop it down if I die more than a few times at a particular spot.

I just have so many games to get through these days (damn you Steam!) that if something stops being fun and starts being aggravating, it just gets dropped immediately for something else.

Generally normal first. If I particularly enjoy the game I sometimes go back and play at its hardest setting again. Like the first Halo for example, did that with it.

Hardest mode out of the box, or 9/10 I just breeze through games with 0 challenge and even less consequence.

A good example would be Fallout3, combat became bothersome repetition quite early on, set to hardest setting, you actually got in trouble if you weren't careful.

Most games these days aren't supposed to challenge, the great unwashed don't like that. It's usually a time=progression setup with some interaction to make it feel like a game.

Not every game is built for wimpering generation y pansies, just most of them.

FPS games - 'Hard'

Strategy games - I'll start on normal and keep ramping it up until I can do it all on expert , ie Company of Heroes

Racing games - Normal or Hard, assists off, locked to driving position

Yeah, fallout 3 can provide a challenge at early levels. I remember when I first played, literally the first quest I did was to blow up megaton, then attempted to walk to the north east corner of the map armed with nothing but a baseball bat, a 10mm and the bb gun.

GTA games are the worst. They're supposed to be for adults, yet the first 2 hours of gameplay is always the same rubbish tutorial.

Racing Games - easy, with all assists on! I'm still pretty new at these, and not that good, but starting to put the difficulties a bit higher.

FPS - I used to just put them on the hardest settings, and play till I reached the end, no matter how many deaths it took. Now, I usually put them on normal - I find I play in shorter bursts, and less often, these days, so I want to spend less time with the challenging bits and more exploring the content I've paid for.

Other games - there are other games?

3, but sometimes 4 (So always Hard. erm...)

With 25 years of gaming experience, I can take it... ;)

Most new games are too easy on Standard, so I always ramp it up. However, I don't get to finish as many games as I'd like these days, due to time, other interests and the harder difficultly level. I make a rod for my own back, as it were. Wouldn't have it any other way though, it'd feel like cheating if I did.

Completely varies according to genre for me.

FPS I play on Hard.
RPG I play on Normal or default.
Racing I play on Hard, but with automatic gear shifting due to not having a wheel.
Action/Adventure I play on Normal or default.
RTS I play on Normal or default.

I can't actually remember a time when I've used anything lower than the Normal or default difficulty setting.

With all that said, I'd say I'm mostly a 2/3, but with a hint of 5 (I do enjoy playing some games on their absolute hardest difficulty setting occasionally).

First play though usually gets left on default or shifted to easy depending on the game and how useless i am at it

if the games worth a 2nd playthrough it get shifted to hard

It depends but mostly 3. I always try out the default difficulty settings. If its too annoying/extremely difficult then i'll try lower ones. I like a game thats beatable but still challenging.

Mostly 2, but the majority of single-player RPGs I'll crank up to 4, if I can - only because I find them easier than most styles of games. I've yet to encounter an open-ended RPG where it's not possible to find a totally broken, Godlike combination of gear and/or skills.

If I'm experienced with the genre - Hard

If I lack experience in the genre - Normal

but no matter what game it is, I never ever play on easy.

easy at first but i only really play through each difficulty if i can 'level into each one' or i can build up a supply of weapons to take into the next difficulty (resident evil 5 is a good example of this... but i couldn't do the unlockable pro though) :)
or if i just really liked the game and feel i need more out of it then ill play through again on higher ones

Kind of depends on the game. I'll play any game on the hardest setting but I won't replay it on that if all it did was turn enemies into bullet sponges.

For example, ME1 just gives nearly every enemy immunity on hardest wo you shoot them for a minute each until they die. ME2 avoids that and makes it genuinely harder.
